Pine Island residents look to future

PINE ISLAND, Minn. (KTTC) -- Pine Island residents are looking at what the future may hold for their town as they got a chance to brainstorm in a meeting Thursday.

The Pine Island Community Planning Team asked residents to come up with ideas to improve everything from the public services to the quality of life. More than 80 people attended the meeting where they brainstormed ideas looking forward -- not focusing on the money or the feasibility --- just the possibility.

They looked for ways to improve the school, quality of life, public services and business environment in the city.

Among the chief concerns -- expanding the school facilities, improving the community's pool and bringing more businesses, including fast food and hotels, into town.

City officials will hold two more meetings to gather ideas before working out a plan to shape the city's future.

"We felt that any improvements to the city needed the credibility of having a group effort instead of one individual effort," said Pine Island Mayor Rob Steele. "We felt we could come together as a community by using everybody's ideas from all aspects of the community and not just one group."

The community planning team is made from members of the school board, city council, EDA and members of surrounding townships.
