ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC)- Fareway Foods held their grand opening Wednesday in Rochester, adding one more grocery store to the already packed list of locations in the city. With all those stores as options for people, what really makes the difference in where people tend to shop?
"The timing is right. Fareway is an expanding company," explains Fareway grocery manager Brian Jordahl. "We have averaged five store opening per year and we will continue to do so in the future with possible Rochester locations to come. So we will see how that turns out."
Located by Workout World near 41st Street, Fareway calls itself "full-service", to the point of taking your groceries out to the car for you. The hype behind the store had been building for some time.
"We used to come here when it was Rainbow, and Rainbow closed its doors and we've been waiting for something else to come up," explains Lloyd Reimers of Rochester. "Now Fareway is here, and this will be the closest place we'll be running to."
With places like Wal-Mart, Hy-Vee, Sam's Club, Cub Foods and Costco as other options for everyone's grocery needs, how does a shopper pick where to shop?
"I always go to Hy-Vee, Target, Wal-Mart," says Jackie, who lives only a few blocks from Fareway, "so a little bit far for me. Here, I can walk!"
Could it be as simple as location, location, location? As much as price may be a factor, maybe all it takes is a closer commute to make the decision for them.
"We'll probably always go back to Hy-Vee, "explain Melissa and Amy, first-time Fareway shoppers who live close by. "It wouldn't hurt to come in here and check it out once in awhile. It is actually convenient because it is close by."
Fareway brings with it a motto of "full service", but it could be the location of the building that brings it the success it desires.
The Rochester location is the 104th Fareway store to open nationwide with most of stores located in Iowa, Illinois and Nebraska. With their steady venture north into Minnesota, they bring with it some healthy competition for the Rochester grocery staples.
