AUSTIN, Minn. (KTTC) -- An Austin woman was honored Thursday for helping save her friend who was apparently having a heart attack.
Helen Jahr received the Certificate of Merit from the American Red Cross.
The award is given to an individual who saves a life using skills learned in Red Cross Safety courses.
Jahr was taking a walk with her friend Lynn Cunningham in September when Lynn's thumbs began aching.
Jahr encouraged her friend to take some aspirin. When her symptoms persisted, Jahr insisted on taking her to the hospital -- an act Cunningham said is deserving of this recognition.
"I think it's fabulous," Cunningham said. "I think it's a wonderful validation for her and for people to pay attention to this kind of thing. That we need to educate ourselves on what is, what those symptoms are for women."
Jahr received a certificate signed by President Obama, medal, and a letter from Sen. Amy Klobuchar.
