Preliminary report released in Iowa medical helicopter crash

MASON CITY (KWWL) -

A preliminary federal report suggests that icy conditions were among the factors that led to the medical helicopter crash that killed three people in northern Iowa.

The newly released report did not conclude what caused the January 2nd crash, but it says several witnesses reported icy conditions that night.

The helicopter crashed just north of Ventura, killing nurse Shelly Lair-Langenbau, paramedic Russell Piehl and pilot Gene Grell.

The crew was en route to pick up a patient in Emmetsburg.
