ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- Five students were expelled from Rochester Public Schools at a special School Board meeting Thursday.
According to Superintendent Michael Muñoz, the majority of those expulsions -- but not all -- were related to recent bomb threats.
Muñoz said the school district has had five recent bomb threats, including those at Gibbs Elementary and Kellogg and Friedell Middle Schools, and identified four individuals related to the threats, but would not reveal if all four of those individuals were included in Thursday's expulsions.
Two of the expulsions that happened at Thursday's seven minute meeting happened specifically because of "terroristic threats," and the three others were because of violation of Student Discipline Policy 506, which includes, but is not limited to, making terrorist threats.
The age, grade or the school that any of these students attended have not been released.
Throughout the process, Muñoz says he has been clear with his intent to recommend expulsion for any student connected to a bomb threat.
"We take the safety of our students as our top priority, and any time someone makes a threat like a bomb threat, we take that seriously, and unfortunately we had some students who were making those types of bomb threats, and they are going to be going to the board tonight for expulsion," Muñoz said.
Muñoz said he has already spoken at two middle schools and will speak at two more about the seriousness of the threats.
There were only five school board members at Thursdays's meeting because new members of the school board have not yet been sworn in.
However, they had to call this meeting Thursday because law requires a maximum of 10 school days between suspension and expulsion.
