Cedar Rapids group looks to beautify I-380 near Wilson Avenue

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

As you drive on Interstate 380 you'll see a landscaped area by Boyson Road and growing trees near Kirkwood Community College.  Both areas were landscaped by Eye 380. The group wants to make Cedar Rapids more attractive to interstate drivers.

"We see I-380 as our interstate, as our Main Street," said Dale Kueter, President of Eye 380. "If the trash is picked up and if there's some landscape improvements, we think it reflects on the entire community."

The not-for-profit uses grants from the Iowa Department of Transportation and donations to fund their projects.

Now the group has their sights set on landscaping hillsides off I-380 near Wilson Avenue.  There's an area on each the northbound and southbound sides they want to landscape.

"There's two areas that have been designated by the Iowa Department of Transportation where we can put, can put plantings," said Kueter. "We will have on either side of the highway 100-foot long plant beds."

The hill is so steep they need retaining walls. Those come with a sticker price of $20 thousand a piece and aren't covered by the DOT grants, so they're asking for donations.

"If you think your community is worth investing in and you have some pride in your community, this is one small way of doing that," said Kueter.

If they raise the money, they want to make the hillside more colorful.

"Adding some native plants, some knock out roses, some Rudbeckia, and Purple Coneflower and different patterns," said Kueter.

It give people just passing through, or even those who drive by every day, something to see.

The group hopes to raise enough money to start planting next summer.
