An Iowa City man faces several charges after police say he crashed his SUV into a Coralville sporting goods store. Police say 23-year-old Joseph Moreno drove his 2002 Ford Explorer through the front doors of Scheels All Sports at Coral Ridge Mall a little before 2:30 a.m. They say when they arrived, they secured the building and an alarm indicated someone inside. They say officers heard a gunshot indicating the person was armed. Six hours later, members of the Coralville Police Emergency Response Team were able to find Moreno and took him into custody. They say they recovered a pistol at the scene which belongs to Moreno. Moreno faces charges of 1st offense OWI, 1st degree burglary, reckless use of a firearm with property damage and carrying a concealed weapon.
After further investigation, Iowa City Police filed separate charges against Moreno. They say Moreno had discharged a handgun in his apartment before the incident at Scheels. They say Moreno's roommates were present at the time and were not injured. Charges of intimidation with a dangerous weapon and reckless use of a firearm have also been filed against him.
