USGS to do flyover over Spring Grove and Decorah

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- Scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey are doing flyovers of the Spring Grove and Decorah areas in the weeks ahead.

They're creating 3D maps of the surface and what's below ground to help note mineral and water resources.

The federal government is trying to get the word out so you're not alarmed when you see a small aircraft making repeated passes in a grid pattern over the region. You might also see a chopper with scientific gear trailing it.

The low-level flights are part of an effort to document places where there might be copper, nickel and platinum.

The planes will be flying as low as 100 feet above the ground.

Geologists are studying the 1.1 billion year old Midcontinent Rift, a major structure that stretches across much of the central United States.
