Headed back to Washington

HONOLULU (AP) -- His wife and daughters will continue their Hawaii vacation, but President Barack Obama will be headed back to Washington later today.

Obama normally extends his end-of-the-year holiday into the New Year, but not this time -- with the clock ticking down to automatic spending cuts and tax increases that economists say could throw the country back into a recession.

Obama and members of Congress are expected back at work on Thursday.
