MnDot prepares for snow

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- The snow is coming at a great time for those of us that want a white Christmas, but it's not the best timing if you were looking to get a head start on your travel plans.

MnDot crews are preparing to keep the roads as safe as possible once the snow flies. Crews were out Wednesday to prepare for the snow and once the snow starts falling they'll have about 100 trucks on the roads trying to keep things clear.

"We just need people to know their situation and watch the condition and kind of be aware of themselves," said Dave Redig, the MnDot Maintenance Operation Superintendent.

Redig says he anticipates that there could be trouble with Interstate 35. Heavy snow in Iowa could shut down parts of the road.

MnDot crews will be out through the whole storm trying to prevent that, and they ask that drivers give plows the space they need.

"We're only as safe as the people around us and they're only as safe as we can make them by letting us do our jobs," Redig said.

Redig also recommends making sure you have a winter kit in your car to stay warm if you do get stranded. He says if you do go into the ditch to stay in your car and call for help. Snowplow drivers will check on any cars they see in the ditch.
