LAKE CITY, Minn. (KTTC) -- It
was one year ago Wednesday that Lake City Police Officer Shawn Schneider was
shot and killed while responding to a domestic violence call at 8:30 a.m.
Lake City held a bell ringing at the same time Wednesday morning.
It was on December 19, 2011, that Officer Schneider was trying to get a girl
out of a home where a former boyfriend was threatening her.
He was shot while saving her and died from his injuries on December 30, 2011.
The bell was heard around the city -- it was rung 11 times in
honor of the number of years Schneider was with the Lake City
police force.
"While
we do struggle to get back to some sort of normality we still miss him
and for those of us who knew him we'll continue to miss him throughout
our careers," said Lake City Police Chief Gary Majchrzak. "We are grateful for what he gave."
There will be a meeting Thursday to decide what to do for a permanent memorial to officer Schneider.
