4-8" of snow possible from Austin to Albert Lea to Rochester

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- KTTC Chief Meteorologist Randy Brock says the heaviest snow will fall early morning on Thursday. This will combine with very strong winds which will last from tonight through Thursday afternoon before slowly dying down Thursday evening. Because of the combination of snow and wind, the National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Warning for the majority of southeast Minnesota and all of northeast Iowa.

As of 12:30am Thursday, snow was falling across southern Minnesota and occasionally heavy snow with thunder and lightning was falling in northeast Iowa, making for a more dramatic scene.

Brock says 4-8" of snow is possible from Austin to Albert Lea to Rochester. From Mason City to Charles City to Cresco, 8-12" of snow is possible. A few locations may end up with significant drifting due to strong winds Thursday morning through the afternoon, making measurements hard to gather.

Snow amounts will increase the further east you travel.

Winds will pick up Thursday morning and will cause blowing and drifting snow creating white out conditions.  Near blizzard or blizzard conditions will be possible Thursday morning as winds pick up to 25-35 mph with gusts around 45 mph possible at times.  The combination of the snow and strong winds will reduce visibilities significantly creating extremely dangerous to near impossible driving conditions.

This is a rapidly intensifying storm and abrupt changes may need to made to the current forecast.
