City Council considers Historic Preservation Ordinance

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- It's a debate that's been happening for months -- what should Rochester do to protect historic buildings?

Now the debate has reached the City Council.

Monday night both sides of the Historic Preservation Ordinance made their case at the City Council public hearing.

The City Council Chambers was packed and discussion that started just before 8 PM extended into the night.

Supporters of the ordinance want to create a system where the City Council designates historic buildings, locations and districts throughout the city.

The designation would require approval before demolishing the building or changing the height, location or footprint.

Those on the other side want an owner consent system of historic preservation with owner incentives.

Both sides say historic preservation is their goal.
