Thrifty shoppers save on holiday shopping

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC)--Some people may not find it fashionable to buy their holiday gifts at a thrift store, but one thing that's always in fashion--good prices.  Jim Churchill has worked for Goodwill for 14 years and says he sees a lot of holiday shoppers as early as November.

"We're not limited to anybody and we're shopped by everybody," said Churchill.  "It's typically people who are looking for a bargain--good merchandise at a good price."

Goodwill receives thousands of donations throughout the year, with their busiest times during the summer months and right before Christmas.  During this time, people are looking for an end of the year tax write-off and others are looking for stocking stuffers at a bargain price.

"My daughters love the things I have found for them over the years at the second hand stores," said Kim Severson of Rochester.  "I can find things from them to fit their personalities and I can buy more for less."

The convenient location of Rochester's Goodwill at 239 28th Street SE has many out-of-toners visiting after appointments at Mayo Clinic Health System.

"We're on our way home from the Mayo Clinic and just happened to stop," said Kim Candhl of LaCrosse, WI.  "We found some Christmas things we're looking at and having a good time."

One woman, who travels from Germany for appointments at the Hospital, makes a point of visiting Goodwill every time she comes to Rochester.  She's shopped at the store for more than seven years.

"Clothing in Germany is very, very, very expensive," said Julia McDaniel.  "I get a good price here...very, very good prices here."

Proceeds from Goodwill go towards supporting over a dozen programs that help people in need.
