WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Three days a week, Dean Borel gets his exercise in with Timi Brown as part of the Med-Fit Program.

"It's a wellness program for people in Waterloo with physical and mental disabilities that need assistance in the gym," said Timi Brown.

Timi and Dean met more than 20 years ago at a support group for brain injury survivors. When Timi became the Med-Fit Program facilitator about 13 years ago here at Covenant Wellness Center, Dean was one of the first participants.

"She's makes me do everything, which I like," said Dean Borel.

The workout includes a cardio portion and a weight lifting component. Dean said the Med-Fit Program has helped transform his life.

"I used to be in a wheelchair. I don't need it anymore. I can walk around without my cane," said Dean Borel.

Timi Brown said she couldn't do Med-Fit alone. She gets help from Debbi Brekunitch.

Together, they see about 800 people a year.

But Timi said the sessions are about more than exercise.

"A lot of our people come because they need to belong. They want to belong, and they want to feel better about themselves, so that's our role, too," Brown.

Besides being the Med-Fit facilitator, Timi Brown works with the cancer rehab program, the Iowa Brain Injury Association and she's also very active with Blue Zones. She's very passionate about getting everyone more active.

"Just want you to move. We want you to take your dog for a walk, meet your neighbors," said Brown.

Dean Borel is proof a little exercise can make a big difference in your quality of life, and for that he owes a big thanks to Timi Brown.

"She's a special person," said Dean Borel

A special person whose working hard to make sure people have the opportunity for healthier and happier lives.
