NEW HAMPTON (KWWL) -

A Democratic member of the Iowa House of Representatives has resigned just weeks after being re-elected.

Brian Quirk of New Hampton said that he would be resigning immediately. He says he'll be taking a job as the general manager of the New Hampton Municipal Light Plant, beginning Monday.

Quirk began serving in the Iowa House of Representatives in 2001 and just recently defeated independent candidate Craig Clark to retain his seat in House District 52.

People in Floyd, Chickasaw and Cerro Gordo counties will go to the polls in a special election January 22.

Tom Sauser, a Democrat and retired teacher and coach from New Hampton, is the only candidate to announce so far.
