CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

The Cedar Rapids Community School District announced on Thursday that Jefferson High School will name their softball field after longtime coach Larry Niemeyer.

Niemeyer, who coached at Cedar Rapids Jefferson for 25 years, retired from teaching in 2011 but continued to coach through the 2012 softball season.

He was told in July that his contract at Jefferson was not being renewed. He was hired as Waterloo West High School's softball coach in October.

Niemeyer led Jefferson to the state softball tournament 19 times and coached them to three state championships.

His 2,089 softball wins is the most ever by any high school coach in the nation.

Marcia Hughes, Community Relations Supervisor for the Cedar Rapids district, says Superintendent Dave Benson approved a request by the Jefferson High School Booster Club and school administration to honor the long-time coach.

"Mr. Niemeyer's 53-year career in education, including numerous coaching recognitions, is worthy of such a significant recognition," Dr. Benson said in a written statement.

Niemeyer was named the 1989 National High School Softball Coach of the Year, 1990 State Softball Coach of the Year, 2004 and 2010 National Federation of State High Schools National Softball Coach of the Year and was inducted into the National High School Hall of Fame in 2002.

"We believe placing Larry Niemeyer's name on the field at the Jefferson Softball Complex, where it can stand as a permanent reminder of his contributions to Jefferson High School and the Cedar Rapids Community School District, is a worthy mark of our appreciation" said Mark Fiala, Booster Club President, in a written statement.

Niemeyer is the only coach in Iowa girls' athletics history to win a state championship in four different sports – basketball, softball, cross country and indoor track.

"Having the Jefferson softball field named after me is truly an honor," Niemeyer said in a written statement. "It is certainly one of the highlights of my career. It is hard to put into words how proud I am."

An official dedication ceremony will be held in the spring.
