Iowa has the highest graduation rate in the U.S.

The U.S. Department of Education says Iowa had the nation's top graduation rate for last year's academic year.

Iowa's rate for the 2010-2011 school year was 88 percent. Wisconsin had the second best graduation rate at 87 percent.

The data released also showed a lower graduation rate for children with disabilities and with a limited proficiency in English. Both cases had a rate of 70 percent.

Iowa Department of Education Director Jason Glass released a statement regarding the new data, saying "…despite Iowa's long-standing commitment to educational equity, the state faces significant gaps in achievement driven largely by the challenges facing students with special needs, students who come from low-income backgrounds, and students whose first language is not English. We have a moral imperative to address those gaps and to give Iowa's children the educational foundation they need to succeed in life."
