Athlete of the Week: Mark Ward

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

In a program that's no stranger to success- Iowa City Regina senior Mark Ward had to wait his turn at quarterback

Mark Ward said, "It was more of an opportunity, to learn from the guys ahead of you. Jack's a great quarterback, Nate Streb was a great quarterback to learn from. It's just to take that opportunity and to run with it."

With Ward under center the offense never stopped.

Marv Cook, Regina Head Football Coach said, "Statistically he's right at the top. He had 28, I think touchdowns and threw for over 2000 yards."

Alex Balke Regina Senior said, "It's a good feeling to have Mark throwing the ball, because he can throw it a long ways, and all you have to do is make the catch."

Ward says, "I like throwing the deep ball, it's one of my favorite routes to throw, kind of just being able to sling it around."

It was Ward's arm that got going in last Friday's championship game against Council Bluffs St. Albert- throwing two touchdowns and propelling the Regals to 28 unanswered points.

But maybe even more valuable, was the senior's poise when his team fell behind 14-7 in the second quarter on high school football's biggest stage.

Ward said, "Just the ability to play it forward. To always have a calm demeanor, a confidence about you that no matter what happens, I'm going to play the next play."

"I think that's kind of the best thing you can have, kind of that confidence, just every time you touch the ball you can do something good with it, you're going to make a play."

Regina made plenty of plays resulting in a third straight championship.

Making the wait- all the more worth it.
