The man convicted of attacking an Iowa City police officer last year, will spend 30 days in jail.
Branden Plummer, 21, a former University of Iowa student, was originally charged with attempted murder and willful injury causing bodily injury for the November 2011 attack on Sergeant Brian Krei.
Witnesses say Plummer choked Krei and slammed his head into a sidewalk.
Plummer pleaded guilty to lesser charges, interference with official acts causing bodily injury and willful injury, in September.
Friday Plummer asked for a deferred sentence, which would eventually wipe the felony off of his record, but that request was denied.
Plummer apologized to Krei during the hearing. "I never wanted to hurt you, but that is no excuse for what I have done and I know that I cannot undo my actions for that day. But, what I can, and what I've tried to do over this past year, is demonstrate that I've become a better person and am continuing to work on this," Plummer said.
Plummer's social worker, Janice Hill, testified that Plummer is trying to turn his life around, enrolling at Upper Iowa University as a full-time student, working a job and and has begun substance abuse treatment.
Hill testified Plummer was highly intoxicated the night of the attack and he panicked.
"I think the intoxication certainly played a role because that would not be typical at all of Brandon's behavior,"said Hill, who has been working with Plummer since he was 12 years old.
Afterwards Sgt. Krei told the media that a weight has been lifted and he was going to try to put this all behind him.
"He apologized, and I hope he's sincere. He felt sincere today when he was in the court room, it appeared that way anyway, so I hope he can get his life straightened out," Krei said.
Overall Plummer spends 60 days in jail, but he will get 30 days credit for time already served.
