Austin Alert: somebody's been opening fire hydrants

AUSTIN, Minn. (KTTC) -- Austin police are hunting for vandals who have been opening up city fire hydrants, causing a mess and creating potentially dangerous situations.

In the past week, Austin Police have been alerted to fire hydrants being opened around the city on four separate occasions.

The first was last Friday in the 2100 block of 8th Avenue Northwest; the most recent was just this morning at 23rd Street and 8th Avenue.

Authorities are concerned about the dangers open hydrants could create, as colder weather could create icy conditions for drivers.

Only public utility workers or city firefighters are properly equipped to open hydrants -- now police are asking you report any suspicious behavior to authorities.
