The Winneshiek County Sheriff's Office confirms one suspect has been arrested in the manhunt in the Ossian area. Authorities now say there is no threat to the community.
Authorities say they have arrested Dan Wildman. He's being held on outstanding warrants in the county jail.
The situation started Tuesday morning in Calmar -- after a reported shooting outside a home located just one block from the South Winneshiek High School. It ended more than five hours later a few miles away in Ossian.
Investigators are not saying why they've ended their search with just one arrest. But they do believe there is no threat to the community.
It was a scary day for those who live in Winneshiek County, where schools were put on lockdown, streets were blocked off, and people were told to lock their homes and vehicles because these suspects could be armed and dangerous.
For example, Judy Kimber rushed to her sons' home in Ossian after learning their street was filled with emergency vehicles.
"Scary. It was scary. And I thought, something's happening to my boys," said Kimber.
Kimber's boys were fine. It turns out this site, on the southeast side of Ossian, was the final stop in a day-long search for people involved in a shooting. The situation started a few miles up the highway in Calmar.
"There was a 911 call of shots being fired by the South Winn School in Calmar," said Iowa State Patrol Trooper Brian Senne.
South Winneshiek Community Schools Superintendent Chris Hoover says he was notified Tuesday morning that someone in Ossian had fired a gun outside and he was advised to put all school buildings in Ossian and Calmar, including DeSales and C.F.S., under precautionary lock-down. The North Fayette, Postville, and Valley Community School Districts went into lockdown as well.
A few hours later in Ossian, they found a vehicle matching the description of one involved in the shooting. That led to a chase through nearby corn fields.
"Subject fled on a four wheeler. So we're down here making sure it's safe," said Senne.
Investigators continued a massive search of the farm -- including help from the county's Special Response Team and State Patrol search planes.
"We have two Iowa State Patrol planes, one with a flare machine on it that can pick individuals up in a corn field, or in a field," said Senne.
Investigators ended their search without making any other arrests, and say the community is safe. But folks like Kimber are still shook up about the situation happening in their small town.
"I can't..... I just feel sorry for what had happened," said Kimber.
Investigators completed their search in Ossian around 2:30 Tuesday afternoon, but their investigation into the shooting is ongoing. The school district was cleared around 2:30 p.m.
Wildman is being held in the Winneshiek County jail on outstanding warrants. He has not yet been charged in this shooting.
