EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (KTTC) -- A former pediatrician of Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire has been charged with sexually assaulting a patient.
Dr. David Van de Loo, 60, was arrested Wednesday on charges of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old boy. Van de Loo has been a pediatrician at Mayo Clinic Health System for the past 18 years.
According to the criminal complaint, the boy told investigators he saw Van de Loo in August for a routine sports physical. The boy said the doctor masturbated him for 20 minutes, left the room, then returned and allegedly did it two more times. Eau Claire police said Van de Loo admitted it, but told officers he did it as part of an exam because of an abnormality he had noticed. Pediatric experts told investigators there was no medical need for what the doctor allegedly did and it was their strong opinion the teen was a victim of inappropriate sexual contact by his pediatrician.
Mayo Clinic Health System issued a statement saying the results of an internal investigation were surprising and deeply troubling. The statement went on to say Van de Loo was placed on administrative leave the day the allegations surfaced, and his employment ended last month.
Van de Loo is due in court on Thursday.
