ACLU sends letter to Iowa City about red light cameras

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is speaking up against Iowa City's efforts to install red light and speed cameras.

On Friday, the ACLU of Iowa submitted a letter to the Iowa City city council.

The Iowa ACLU is asking the city council to accept a proposed ordinance banning traffic cameras, automatic license plate readers, and unmanned aerial devices.

Iowa City approved a plan to install 10 cameras at the most accident prone intersections in February.

In prior interviews, the city attorney has said the group wanting a referendum missed the deadline to have such a vote.
