Police: Man smoked meth before assaulting and stabbing girl

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- Rochester police say the man arrested for stabbing a 12-year-old girl had sexually assaulted her after smoking meth before the incident.

Dillon Caudill, 31, used a key to enter his girlfriend's apartment in the 200 block of 6th Avenue Northwest just before 3 a.m. Tuesday. Police Lt. Casey Moilanen says that's when Caudill walked into a bedroom and sexually assaulted his girlfriend's 12-year-old daughter. She screamed and the girl's mother woke up. She then tried to get Caudill out of her daughter's bedroom. A struggled ensued and that's when police say Caudill stabbed the 12-year-old girl with a scissors.

Lt. Moilanen says Caudill took a knife before leaving the residence. He told police he wanted to kill himself. He had a self-inflicted puncture wound in his upper torso but it wasn't serious enough for him to be taken to the hospital.

The 12-year-old girl is in stable condition and investigators say she may go home in the next few days. Her mother did not have serious injuries.

Police believe Caudill moved to Rochester from Colorado late last year. He was charged with robbery, terroristic threats and home invasion in Colorado.

Earlier on Tuesday, police had surrounded Caudill's residence on 3rd Avenue NW. Seven hours later, the Emergency Response Unit entered Caudill's apartment but couldn't find him.

Caudill remained at large until a police officer recognized him walking along Marion Road near 16th St. SE at about 4:20 p.m. Tuesday. He was arrested without incident.

Caudill is expected to make his first appearance as early as Thursday in Olmsted County District Court.
