The East/West rivalry lived up to the hype as the Trojans edged their crosstown rival 27-21 in overtime in an epic battle Friday night at Memorial Stadium in Waterloo.
Waterloo East which improved to 4-2 with the win got on the scoreboard first. The Trojans' Desmond VanArsdale returned the opening kickoff 88 yards to the West 11 yard line. After two penalties back East up to the 22, quarterback John Magnuson hit Russell Jones with a 22 yard touchdown pass to put the Trojans on top 7-0 with just 1:22 gone in the game.
West drove 70 yards in six minutes to tie the game. Lance Dunn Jr. scored on a ten yard run to make it a 7-7 game with 4:32 to play in the first quarter. That would be the score at halftime.
The game see-sawed back and forth and went into overtime tied at 21 where VanArsdale would score the game winning touchdown. West falls to 2-4 on the season.
