UPDATE: Anderson Erickson employees return to work
WATERLOO (KWWL) -
Union workers voted to return to work after spending Monday on strike.
About 300 workers at Anderson Erickson Dairy in Des Moines went on strike Monday after the workers represented by the local Teamsters Union voted not to accept the company's latest contract offer. There were also a few workers seen striking outside an Anderson Erickson building in Waterloo.
The strike began early Monday morning after workers rejected the proposal the night before.
Mike Klootwyk, the vice president of Teamsters Union Local 120, says the contract would have required workers to accept a pay freeze and to pay significantly more for health care insurance.
Kim Peter, Director of Marketing with Anderson Erickson, says the previous plan offered two healthcare options and the rejected offer included three healthcare plans.
The previous 4-year contract expired in March and the last negotiating sessions were held last month.
The two sides have agreed to discuss the contract on Oct. 31. Union employees will return to work until that time.
Peter said the strike impacted drivers and those working inside the plants. The company had planned to hire replacement workers. Peter said there may have been some missed deliveries on Monday morning.
Those missed deliveries included Waterloo Schools and Cedar Valley Catholic Schools.
According to Sharon Miller with the Waterloo Community School District, Highland Elementary School was the only building impacted by the milk shortage. Highland served milk to those that had cereal for breakfast on Monday morning and served juice to anyone that ate breakfast pizza. Miller says all other buildings had enough milk on hand for breakfast and the district was able to buy milk for all buildings including Highland before lunch.
Cedar Valley Catholic Schools served water at Columbus High School instead of milk. The school district plans to have milk on hand for all students on Tuesday.
