Wayne Jerman named new Cedar Rapids Police Chief

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Cedar Rapids has a new top cop.

In a special meeting Tuesday afternoon, the city council consented to hire Wayne Jerman as the new Police Chief.

He's currently the Assistant Chief in Montgomery County, Maryland.

"His job is going to be to learn as much about the community as possible, about the department as possible," said Jeff Pomeranz, City Manager.

There were 35 candidates for the position.

The selection process involved several commissions, and even a public meet and greet with the top seven candidates last month.

They felt Jerman was the best man for the job because of his more than 30 years in the police force.

His goal is to make Cedar Rapids the safest city in the nation.

"I know it could be a very lofty goal," said Jerman.

Jerman hopes to accomplish that goal by increasing the city's community policing efforts.

"It's about forming partnerships and bonds with communities and agencies, not just the police department but other city agencies and identifying problems and solving these problems," said Jerman.

City staff felt having a new chief who recognized the importance of community policing was a priority.

"I'd say we're going to see a lot more outreach into the community, into all kinds of different groups and areas," said Pomeranz.

Jerman replaces Greg Graham who left in January after four years with the department.

The new chief starts October 29.
