Police investigate several sexual assaults in Rochester

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- Rochester police are aggressively investigating several cases of sexual assaults that have similar characteristics.

According to Captain Brian Winters over the past four months law enforcement has received four reports of sexual assaults - the most recent was reported on Wednesday.

It happened in the 1200 block of West Center Street just before 11:30 p.m.

The female victim reported being physically and sexually assaulted and said earlier in the day she had noticed someone in a van staring at her as she walked in the area.

Police are seeking information about the vehicle or occupant even though the person is not yet considered a suspect.

The woman described it as a burgundy mini-van with wood grained sides.

The other incidents date back to early May.

The incidents occurred in a general area near St. Marys Hospital on 2nd Street SW, Highway 52 on the west, Kutzky Park on the north and 6th Avenue on the east.

On May 4 a woman reports she was getting ready for a jog around 5:30 a.m. when she was sexually assaulted.

On July 1 around 3:00 a.m. a woman says she awoke to a man in her bedroom touching her.

And on September 4 just before 10:00 p.m. and adult male says he was in a bedroom of his home when an intruder opened the bedroom door before fleeing after a confrontation.

Police say it's too early to say for sure these incidents are related.

Rochester Police describe the suspect as "light skinned black male, 20-30 years of age, 5-6 to 5-10 height, average to athletic build."

Captain Winters says they are releasing this information so that people in or near the neighborhood can take action to lock and secure their homes and be alert to surroundings.

Anyone with any information that could aid police are urged to call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
