HOUSE DIVIDED: Iowa couple name their baby in honor of the Cy-Hawk rivalry

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

KWWL Director Nick Kuker is a life-long Hawkeye fan. His wife Crystal is a life-long Cyclones fan. From their first date to their wedding, and now their firstborn child, the couple has centered their relationship around their favorite pastime.

"The first thing I said to him was, 'My sister said you're a nice guy, but I can't believe that since you're a Hawkeye fan,'" Crystal Kuker said.

The two used the interstate rivalry as a starting point for their relationship.

"Right off the bat we started talking about the game and I said, 'Why don't we make a wager that whoever wins the game, that person has to buy for our first day,'" Nick Kuker said.

The friendly banter has turned into a lesson in compromise.

At their wedding a year later, a coin flip determined which school's fight song they would walk out to. Their wedding cake was half Cyclone, half Hawkeye.

And the name of their son, who will be born any day now, will be a modified version of team stadiums: Tryce Kinnick Kuker.

"I think it actually came as a joke, we just kind of threw it out there as we could do Trice and we could do Kinnick," Nick said.

The new boy could make his arrival on game day. At the very least, Tryce Kinnick's birthday will always fall near the Cy-Hawk match up. And the winner of Saturday's game will determine what team's onesie the baby boy will wear home from the hospital.

So will Tryce Kinnick grow up cheering for Iowa or Iowa State?

"Whatever he ends up being is awesome. Maybe he'll be a UNI fan and we'll be completely a house divided," Crystal said.
