Byron students grieve classmate's death

BYRON, Minn. (KTTC) -- Students are grieving the loss of a classmate.

Deianerah Jean Logan had just finished her first day as a senior at Byron High School when her vehicle rear-ended a school bus on Tuesday afternoon.

She died at the age of 17.

"It certainly brings you as a human being through every range of emotions, from the excitement of having students here for the first day, and then having to deal with this and having to communicate with those students the very next day about the loss of one of their classmates. So it certainly has been an emotional roller coaster," said Jeff Elstad, superintendent of Byron Schools.

Superintendent Elstad says friends and family called her "Deej."

She leaves behind three siblings, a home in Pine Island, and her classmates.

"Whenever you lose a student, there's a loss and it impacts everyone from our early childhood building right up to our high school," said Superintendent Elstad.

Several students placed purple ribbons on their lockers for Deej.

Superintendent Elstad says Deej was a very involved student, who was preparing herself academically to do just about anything.

Elstad went on to say, "It can happen to anyone. And it's one of those constant reminders about how some days we're teaching math and science and reading, and the next day we're teaching about life."

Deej's funeral and visitation will be at the Community Celebration Church in Byron.

Visitation will be held on Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The funeral will take place on Saturday at 10 a.m.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
