Commission approves Winona Co. frac sand mine application

Posted:

WINONA, Minn. (KTTC) -- The Winona County Planning Commission has approved an application for a new frac sand mine near Utica.

The committee voted 6 to 3 Thursday night in favor of the proposed 20-acre mine west of Winona County Road 113.

Opponents say they're concerned about truck traffic to the site and the number of acres the mine is proposed for.

The Winona County Board must approve the application before work on the mine begins.

Meanwhile, the Goodhue County Board voted unanimously Thursday night to extend its silica sand mining moratorium. It was set to expire in September.
