Hormel Foods celebrates the 75th birthday of Spam

Posted: Updated:

AUSTIN, Minn. (KTTC) -- One of the nation's most popular food items is celebrating a milestone birthday, and the guest list to the birthday party is over 6,000 people long.

Hormel Foods' SPAMTASTIC Grand Opening Expansion Celebration not only honors their most popular product, but also shows off the new expansion to the company's world headquarters to the public.

With a guest list as big as Hormel anticipated, the entertainment needed to be huge and the company delivered.

People arrived by bus to the headquarters and got to enjoy some fancy cars right in front of the building. They were then treated to a tour of the new additions, which included a cafeteria with free Spam and photo opportunities with Sir Cans-A-Lot and Spammy.

Heading outdoors continued the fun with a stage featuring The Temptations.

It is a celebration certainly fit for a product so embedded in the community.

"Well, you know, the community of Austin and Spam luncheon meat and Hormel Foods, it all just goes together," explains Jeff Ettinger, the President and CEO of Hormel Foots. "When people have visitors in town, they're going to take them to the Spam Museum and they're going to show off their Spam recipes. Or even if you travel, once you mention you're from Austin, Minnesota, invariably Spam comes up."

The party was not without its opponents. Members of PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, arrived in pig suits protesting against the use of animals in Hormel products. Their presence did not disrupt the festivities.
