MILLVILLE/ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- All year southeastern Minnesota's weather has only been consistent in one way. It's been wacky.
We had little snow this winter, a warmer than average spring, a spring frost that threatened crops and we've been in the midst of a drought.
Mark Erwin who works in the fields on John and Lori's farm explains, "At the beginning we got out in the fields in April, which is the earliest it's been in a long time and everything started out good and looked good and then it didn't rain for 20 or 30 days and it slowed everything up. Now we've been getting some rain lately, every little bit helps."
But good news is it doesn't appear the year's wild weather will mean less fresh produce available.
J&J Produce's Sharon Horstmann says, "Our season has been wonderful, everything is coming along really good."
This year the weather has been anything but average. But don't think that means you won't be able to fill your plate with locally grown fruits and veggies all season long.
Erwin says, "We got enough sweet corn now that it's going good and it's far enough along that it's going to make it for awhile. It was really nerve-wracking the last couple weeks when we had no rain."
The Dondlingers plan ahead, filling acre after acre, to make sure if anything, they'll have more than enough produce to satisfy customers.
Horstmann says, "Every year is different. You don't know what the year is going to bring. So you just take that chance and you go out there and you go gung-ho at it and go with the weather and the flow and hopefully everything works out and you have a great season."
Currently, you'll find the super-sweet variety of corn available at J & J Produce Stands. It's all picked fresh daily. Several varieties are expected to be available through September. The stand is manned from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
