Strangulation cause of death in Mason City murder

MASON CITY, Iowa (KTTC) -- New information has been released in the death of a young woman found murdered in her apartment early Tuesday morning in Mason City.

According to news release from Mason City Police Chief Michael Lashbrook, 34-year-old Aaron Harris was arrested in connection with the death of 40-year-old Sarah Winters.

Wednesday morning, the Iowa Medical Examiner's Office says Winters was killed by strangulation.

She was found unresponsive in her apartment on the 400 block of North Washington shortly after midnight and later pronounced dead at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Harris has been charged with 1st degree murder and is being held in the Cerro Gordo County Jail.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is helping with the case.
