Red Cross blood shortage

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- The American Red Cross is asking for your help.

Blood is in short supply this summer. The American Red Cross is seeing storage supplies down 10 percent from normal.

That may not seem like whole lot, but 10 percent accounts for 50,00 units. Just one unit of blood can save three lives.

Some simple math puts that at 150,000 lives that could be potentially be saved. Because of summer activities and more auto accidents the demand for blood in the summer is typically higher, but the supply is shorter.

"We do run into shortages frequently in the Summer because universities and high schools are out and they can comprise about 20 percent of the donations during the school year. Also people get busy with summer and they just kind of forget about it," said Joellen Barak, Biomedical Services Coordinator with the American Red Cross.

Some rules have changed making donating a bit easier, to see if you are eligible or where to donate you can 1-800 Red Cross
