ADAMS, Minn. (KTTC)- It has been 150 years since the beginning of the Civil War, and even though there were no battles fought in Minnesota, that is not stopping some from stepping foot onto a battlefield.
As if a Minnesota town travels back in time, people in Adams load up their muskets and cannons and prepare for battle.
No, it is not an actual battle, but a reenactment from the Civil War, a time that divided our country.
"Well, it depends on numbers. We have no reports of Confederate numbers. Our troop numbers are down a little bit, but we do have superior artillery we feel, according to our scouts," says Col. John Duggan, the chief medical officer for the Union troops.
"I do believe that the right side is going to win," says Jerry Arthur, a soldier with the Confederate army.
Participants were quick to stay in character as they felt it key to be authentic, to share their knowledge of the period to those of our next generation, people who may know nothing of the Civil War.
"It's amazing how many people forget their history," explains Jerry Arthur Guritz of St. Paul, taking time off from his role to offer a current time perspective, "and we try to present the reason we are Confederates, even though most of us are from Minnesota and Northern Iowa, is to tell both sides of the story."
At 11:00 AM sharp, the battle begins.
No actual battle was depicted, but a plan was discussed beforehand, including a Confederate tactic of stealing a cannon.
Both sides refused to give ground.
Saturday it is not about who won, but to remind people of our not-so-distant past.
Those in attendance found the Civil War Days to be a unique experience and a chance for everyone to see history unfold right before their eyes.
