Stewartville VFW asking for help finding rifles

Posted:

STEWARTVILLE, Minn. (KTTC)--  Members of the Stewartville VFW are asking for your help in recovering 9 rifles that must be accounted for.

In the 1950's ten Springfield rifles were given to the VFW for members who performed the in color guard.

At that time the Stewartville VFW did not have a post and that means no where to store these weapons, so members of the Honor Guard would take the rifles home with them.

Since then most of the members who had the weapons have passed away.

The missing rifles may be sitting in closets or may have even been passed down to other family members.

Commander of the Stewartville VFW, Roger Peterson says, "The ones we're missing are Springfield's, they look quite a bit alike, but this is what we're looking forward to getting back. They are very old weapons used in World War I, World War II. They are each serial numbered and we have the serial numbers for each one and if you have them it would be great."

The VFW expressed that they are not after anyone, they simply want to try and get the weapons back to the Stewartville American Legion for required accountability.
