Flames destroy part of Jennie-O turkey farm in Dodge County

DODGE CENTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- Crews say lightning sparked a fire at a turkey farm in Dodge County early Friday morning.

The flames broke out around 4:30 a.m. at a Jennie-O turkey facility at 58184 State Highway 56 in Dodge Center.

According to Sheriff Jim Jensen, the fire started in the facility's egg building and spread to another building through a hallway connecting the two.

Crews were able to contain the blaze before it spread to the large turkey barns.  It is estimated that fewer than 200 turkeys were killed in the fire.

Damage is estimated at around $250,000.

The West Concord Fire Department, Claremont Fire Department, Dodge Center Fire Department, Mantorville Fire Department and Dodge County Sheriff's Office all responded to the scene.
