STEWARTVILLE, Minn. (KTTC) -- Construction begins Wednesday on the new FedEx facility in Stewartville.
The Stewartville City Council announced the plans Tuesday to begin construction. A builder has been selected and a permit filed.
"Obviously to have a world-wide corporation make one of their new homes here in Stewartville is great news for our community," said City Administrator Bill Schimmel.
The new distribution center will cover 60,000 square feet which wasn't the initial plan which began about two years ago. "They (FedEx) said they will probably start with a 20 to 30 job range and that was with a 30,000 square foot building. But the final plans now call for a 60,000 square foot building," said Schimmel. "We're hoping those numbers can move up accordingly."
The 8 acres of land was purchased in Schumann Business park in Northwest Stewartville for just more than $850,000.
Construction is set to start simultaneously with the city who will plan to build new roads to expand the growing business district and linking FedEx to their important pipelines of I-90, Hwy. 63, and Hwy 52.
Right now, FedEx handles shipping in and out of the Rochester area at a sorting complex on the east side of the Rochester International Airport.
