Preventing Asian Carp in the Great Lakes

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) -- The Canadian government says in the next five years they will spend 17.5-million dollars to help prevent Asian carp from invading the great lakes.

Silver and bighead carp started moving into the southern united states decades ago. Since then they have been migrating up the Mississippi river and its tributaries. Scientists said if the silver and bighead carp do invade the great lakes it could damage native species. Canadian officials said they will focus on educating people about the dangers the fish pose and how people can avoid transporting the fish. Canada said they will work with U.S. experts on a rapid response system in case the fish are discovered in the Great Lakes.
