Fire destroys historic church, injures firefighters

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- A historic church in south Minneapolis has been destroyed by fire, and at least five firefighters were injured while battling the blaze.

The Walker Community United Methodist Church went up in flames last night. Minneapolis Deputy fire chief Todd Steinhilber said the cause is still under investigation. A police spokesman says four of the five injured firefighters were being treated for heat-related injuries. Steinhilber didn't provide an update on the extent of injuries.

The church is located in the Powderhorn Park neighborhood. It had about 150 members. The church began in 1886 about two blocks from its current location, but as the area grew, the congregation began looking for a new home. The members opened the current building in 1910.
