Couple weds near parents' graves in Austin

Updated:

AUSTIN, Minn. (AP) -- The parents of a Minnesota bride and groom couldn't attend their wedding in person, so the couple did the next best thing -- they got married in the cemetery where their new in-laws are buried.

Diane Waller and Randy Kjarland exchanged vows Saturday near the graves of their parents in Austin's Oakwood Cemetery.

Waller, the bride, tells the Austin Daily Herald  that some people thought the cemetery wedding was a joke. But she says others cried when they heard the couple's story.

During an earlier visit to the cemetery, Kjarland knelt in front of Waller's parents' gravestones and asked for permission to marry their daughter. He produced a ring and proposed to Waller.

At the wedding 11 family members buried there got a rose to mark their graves.
