Anchors aweigh; STEM students launch solar boat

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- Rochester STEM Academy students are mixing the sun with the water.  Thursday they tested their newly-built solar powered boat on Silver Lake in Rochester.

They are preparing to participate in the solar boat regatta put on by Midwest Renewable Energy Society.  That will be May, 19 at Lake Phalen in Minneapolis.

The students have been working on assembling the panel to the watercraft with some local supporters.

"They just spent a few nights after school, an hour and a half each night, with relatively simple equipment. I had to borrow and 80 watt solar panel because we only have larger ones. And we borrowed a battery and trolling motor and quickly put it together," said owner of Solar Connection. Shellum says the students did the wiring and created the mounting bracket for the solar panel.

Aside from the wind it was a pretty good say on the water.
