Winona man arrested in violent assault, robbery

WINONA, Minn. (KTTC-TV) -- A Winona man has been arrested and jailed in a violent armed robbery Monday afternoon at an apartment on East 3rd Street.

Police Chief Paul Bostrack says officers responded to a call for help at 2:46 p.m. Monday, and found a man who said he had been beaten and robbed in his apartment at gunpoint.  The police chief says the 21-year-old man had obvious injuries to his head, face and neck.

Police later arrested Brandon David Taber, 36, of Winona and have jailed him on initial charges of Aggravated Robbery-First Degree, Assault-Second Degree with a Dangerous Weapon, and Terroristic Threats.  Chief Bostrack says the man alleges that Taber and two other men and a woman were involved in an attack at his apartment in the 650 block of East 3rd Street.

The victim told police that the four burst into his apartment, and that the men accosted them while the woman stood by as a "lookout."  The man says he was punched and robbed and them struck eight times in the head with a three-foot silver pipe or baseball bat.  He told police Taber then held a pistol to his head and demanded that he open a safe in the apartment, and that the group fled with $5,500 from the safe.

The other three allegedly involved in the attack and robbery have not yet been arrested.
