Stewartville soldier killed in Afghanistan


STEWARTVILLE, Minn. (KTTC)--  Nicholas Dickhut of Stewartville was killed Sunday morning in Afghanistan.

23 year old Sergeant Dickhut was a member of the 3rd Stryker Brigade that deployed to Afghanistan in December. This was his second deployment.

Nick enlisted in the Army in September 2008, in 2009 he was assigned to the 3rd stryker brigade combat team. Nick was a forward observer, on the front lines to identify and communicate enemy positions for other units.

His unit was on a routine patrol when they came under fire by the Taliban. Sgt. Dickhut died Sunday from the wounds sustained by the attack. 

He is the first Minnesotan to die in Afghanistan in 2012.
