Road Construction Kickoff 2012

Posted:

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- $187-million dollars is what MNDOT has budgeted for this summer's 37 road construction projects in District 6.  They released their plans today as part of the 2012 Construction Kickoff.

MNDOT says they are at the point where different contracts have been awarded and they're starting pre-construction meetings.  From there, the prime contractor and all the sub-contractors will get together and then the construction will get underway, and some commuting headaches will occur.

"We do have a lot of work this year compared to other years," said PMNDOT Project Engineer Kyle Lake. "Last year of course was busy year. And this year is shaping up to be just as busy if not busier than last year."

"We have 37 construction projects this year but then three of them are carried over due to the government shutdown. And then three of them are multiyear projects," said MNDOT Community Relationship Coordinator Kristin Lamellar.

One of those projects delayed by the shutdown is the paving of Highway 14 from Rochester west to Byron and then on to Kasson.

"I'm currently working with a couple of different contractors to see what we can do to get out there a little early since we had such a great winter," said Lake.

There are a lot of different factors that go into deciding how 187 million dollars gets divided,  "You take into consideration lane miles, pavement conditions, things like that, how much traffic you actually have," said Kammueller.  Once the information is collected, MNDOT disperses the money to where they feel it needs it the most.

Meanwhile, some small town highways are set to receive a big overhaul.

"We're going to be reclaiming the pavement on Highway 56 from West Concord to Kenyon," said Lake. "Basically that's taking the pavement that's out there today and sort of chewing it up and paving a new surface over it."

It's not just the highway that is in between Kenyon to the north and West Concord to the south, it's the Root River that is running right through the middle. The bridge that was built in 1937 is going to get replaced."

Another project.

The intersection of 75th street and Highway 63 in Northeast Rochester.

"We've got quite a bit of cross traffic coming on to highway 63 and they are having trouble making turns," said MNDOT Project Engineer Paul Schauer.  "The feeling was that if we do put up a traffic signal. There's quite a few times a day when a traffic signal is not needed. So at those times of day traffic would be stopping and there wouldn't be any need to. So we thought the better option would be to have everybody slow down as they come through here."

John Marshall baseball player makes remarkable recovery after suffering stroke during game

Baseball is a way of life for John Marshall's Austin Brown. In what feels like the swing of a bat, it's already Senior Night. "It's going to be really tough after the game, just thinking I'm not going to play on this field anymore," says Brown. The soon-to-be graduate is the right fielder for the John Marshall High School Rockets this year. But just one year ago, Austin's senior season seemed out of reach.
