Boats launch early on Lake Pepin

LAKE CITY, Minn. (KTTC)-- The crew at Lake City Marina started launching boats Monday. It's been going on at the Lake City Marina for more than 65 years. This year is a very early start.

Launching Operator Jerry Koellner says, "We are all retired and we all come down every spring and every fall. We take the boats in and we take the boats out and it's just a great group of guys."

We also spoke with Dick Klein, who has been helping with the operation for the last 9 years. He signals the slow migration of vessels from high and dry to the launching lift. That's where they take their first dip into the sparkling waters of Lake Pepin.

Luckily, this years temperatures were a blessing for boaters as they prepared for launch.

Wisconsin resident and boat owner, Tony Chasensky explained how he was able to prepare his boat early this year do to the weather. Chasensky was happy to get his boat in the water explaining, "We get together with a lot of friends from Wisconsin and this is a meeting place for us."

A reminder though-- even if we've seen temperatures in the seventies, the water is still bone-chillingly cold. So life jackets are key when riding any vessel.
