Storm tears roof off shed, blows it across yard

EITZEN, Minn. (KTTC) -- Within two minutes mother nature changed the landscape of one family's farm yard in southeast Minnesota, near the Iowa border. The extensive damage was caused by the strong line of thunderstorms that moved through the area Monday evening.

It all happened just south of Eitzen, when a strong, sudden gust of wind blew through Karl and Jean Stokman's yard.

"Just heard strong wind, it came on really fast. The curtains in the house were swaying, it was strange," explained Kasey Stokman.

Kasey was at home with his family when a storm rolled into rural Eitzen.

"I had come to the front door and I could see just white debris in the air and I thought, this is not good. I yelled to my parents, you guys have to get in the basement," recalled Kasey.

Soon after the family would find themselves in complete darkness. With downed power lines and their farm yard, with six generations of family memories, torn apart.

"It entirely lifted the entire roof of my pole shed off the and the poles were actually pulled right out of the ground. There are empty holes, two rows of poles," stated Karl Stokman.

Snapped tree branches and twisted metal blew across the yard to the Stokman's home.

"There's some structural damage to the rafters of the roof. Shingle damage. The trim work, some of the trim work is damaged," explained Karl.

The pole shed is a loss, and their home will need some repairs but the family knows material objects can be replaced. The lives of the ones you love can't be.
