ST. PAUL, Minn. (KTTC) -- The Hermantown Hawks overpowered the Lourdes Eagles 7-2 Wednesday evening in the Minnesota State 1A Hockey Tournament, ending the Eagles' championship dreams for the year.
As in the previous three years, Lourdes will have to settle for the consolation bracket. Competition begins anew for the Eagles Thursday at noon against New Ulm.
It was a tall order for the Eagles facing top-ranked, top-seeded Hermantown, coming in to the game with a 28-0 record.
And it didn't look good for the Purple early against the Hawks. Just 33 seconds into the game Hermantown strikes...The puck is re-directed...Bo Gronseth is credited with the goal and it's 1-nothing Hawks.
They would build a 2-nothing lead when Lourdes puts in its first goal...Connor Nellans shows some strength on this move and goes five hole and it's a 2-1 Hockey game.
Hermantown had only given up one goal over the last 9-games coming into the tournament. With two-seconds left in the first period, Lourdes scores from the face off...Alex Funk guiding the puck home and it's a 3-2 Hermantown lead after one.
The second period was not good... the Hawks scored three goals in just over six-minutes...Chris Benson with the circus tally.
Just under a minute later...Look at Jared Kolquist with the backhander and just like that Hermantown has the 5-2 lead...The Hawks showing why they went unbeaten during the regular season.
They add another one at the 6:13 mark of the second...The puck is turned over and look at Jared Thomas with a little puck magic...6-2 Hermantown after two periods of play... the final was 7-2.
